This life review Christmas movie is about a family who adopts another family each year for an “elf” project – only we called it a Christmas Angel when I was a kid. The Buckley mom chooses the boys’ arch enemies: a family of bullies. Meanwhile, a new family moves in next door and all the boys are interested in Juniper. I don’t know exactly how all these kids of the same age group are in one family, but the mom is also pregnant. I think this is supposed to take place in the ‘80s? There are some blue eyeshadows, gigantic hair, and big bow headbands. Are all these families foster kids? They don’t even make an attempt at making them look alike! I’m confused.
These families are hella sweet, actually. The Wonder Years vibe is strong with this one, I don’t know if that adds anything to the plot, but it’s charming. And the obsession with the Christmas catalog is something I remember well from my own childhood in the 1980s-1990s.
All told, not my favorite movie. But it’s super family friendly and pretty entertaining. So if you’ve got kidlets or young folks in your family, this is one I would recommend.
